"Instructions to Benning Wentworth Esq His Majesty's Governor and Commander in Chief in and over the Province of New Hampshire in New England in America..." Document by the Lord Justices at Whitehall given to Wentworth with his commission as governor of the Province of New Hampshire, and a listing of his duties and powers. Councillors' include: Shadrach Walton, George Jeffery, Jotham Odiorne, Henry Sherburne, Richard Waldron, Theodore Atkinson, Joshua Peirce, Joseph Sherburne, Ellis Huske, Richard Wybird, Samuel Smith and John Downing Esq. Instructions pertain the council, salaries of government officials including regulations on gifts to officials, passing of laws, currency and use of public money, imports (liquor), whale fishing, land grants and townships, religion, forest and mast trees, suppression of vices (laws against blasphemy, profanity, adultery, incest, swearing, drunkenness, etc.), bills of mortality, militia, privateers and pirates, harbors, mapping lands, encouraging trade and merchants and specifics about the boundaries of the province.
