One page letter from Joshua Martin in St. Johns, Antigua to John Langdon in New York. Joshua Martin (1770- ) was a shipmaster in Portsmouth. Could not sell the lumber in St. Martin, after all, nor in St. Eustatia, so came to St. Johns and has sold the cargo at fibve pounds for rum at three shillings a gallon, which is very high, but all produce is high there owing to the past two years drought, he says. But the quality is very good, 25 per cent alcohol. Expects to leave by June 1st and barring accidents reach Portsmouth by July 1st. Dated May 20, 1790. |
