Title |
John Taylor Gilman to John Langdon |
Scope & Content |
Two-page letter from John Taylor Gilman in Philadelphia to John Langdon in Portsmouth. Has no dispatches from Charlestown. The conduct of the enemy at New York is such that it is difficult to determine whether they expect to spend the winter there or not. A 40-gun ship belonging to "his most Christian Majesty" was driven onshore about 100 miles south of Philadelphia by several British ships. Had a large quantity of money on board, clothing, etc. Most of the money was saved, whereas the clothing was largely taken by the enemy. The ship was commanded by Captain La Touche, who along with approximately 500 sailors have been taken prisoner to New York. 20 or so land officers were on board, but were able to get off the ship before it was taken prisoner. They have arrived in Philadelphia. Dated September 25, 1782. |
