Title |
Esther Finck slam book, 1933-c1939 |
Scope & Content |
Esther Finck slam book for the circa 1938-1939 school year (seventh grade) at Portsmouth Junior High School. The volume was originally an autograph book gifted by Jeanette Ila Jensen in 1933, with autographs dating from 1934 in Bennington, Nebraska, and 1935 in Maryland. "Slam books" were passed around at school for classmates to comment on one another (the intention was that the comments would be anonymous). Typically, the book's owner would write a question and the students would fill in their responses. Finck's slam book is fifty-eight numbered pages; some pages appear to be missing. Pages 1 to 16 include autographs and poems from Finck's classmates and teachers at school in Bennington, Nebraska, in 1934 and in Maryland (the Washington, D.C., area) in 1935. Page 17 begins the "slam book," listing Finck's name and address at 605 Lincoln Avenue In Portsmouth. Finck was in the seventh grade, dating the entries to the 1938-1939 school year. Her home room teacher at Portsmouth Junior High School that year was Miss [Edith J.] Mospan. Each page gives the name of Finck's classmates in ink, with comments about that student written primarily in pencil.
