Admin/Biographical History |
John Lowe (1796-1873) of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was a businessman. He is usually referred to as "John Lowe Jr." even though his father was Elisha Lowe (c1767-1808), perhaps to avoid confusion with a contemporaneous Capt. John Lowe, also of Portsmouth. He began as a merchant, operating a ship chandlery at 10 Merchants Row in Portsmouth from 1817 to 1830. He sold the business to John D. Simes and moved to Exeter in 1830. Lowe served as the agent at the Exeter Manufacturing Company in Exeter from 1831 to 1859. An announcement in the January 4, 1859, issue of the Lowell Daily Citizen and News states, "Mr Lowe, who has acted as agent of the Exeter Manufacturing Co. for 28 years, has resigned. He can say what few agents in charge of so large an establishment for such a period can assert, that his books have never showed a mistake in the counting of a cent, or the measure of a yard of cloth." This fastidiousness is reflected in Lowe's shipping ledger from 1829 to 1835, with its neat handwriting and detailed records. Lowe was also involved in the Commercial Bank of Portsmouth and the Boston and Maine Railroad. |
