Jeremiah Libbey to John Langdon |
Scope & Content |
Two-page letter from Jeremiah Libbey in Portsmouth to John Langdon in Philadelphia. Transcription by Cecilia Paquette: Portsmouth Decr. 23d. 1791 Dear Sir, I have just rec'd yours of the 9th Instant, and have examined every entry in my books (as carefully as the time would permit) from Jany. 1791 to Decr. 23d. following and find that the whole Amount of all unpaid Letters that I have recd. for Exeter Amount to 279 penny weight equal to 4.13/ lawful money out of which Amount Col Ladd has had 162 penny weight equal to 54/ of the money, and Col Ladd has taken three Quarters of his out of this Office himself his business being here, you know-- and he says he must and he now is trying [letter torn] an Estate here in Order to move his family, (his navigation being already here) you are as well acquainted with the Badness of the Cross road as I am, and in many Instances it cannot be pass'd in the Winter. I suppose it would be cheaper for the Public & better for the Exeter people if they must have a mail from Boston before we have it here, to have a Cross post. the whole sum recd. exclusive of Col Ladds is about 40/ Quere[?] whither for that sum it is adviseable to risque the failure of the regularity of the Mails even for twice in the Year, but I suppose the the Expence will be much greater than the advantage--you will excuse the roughness & Incorrectness as I have not time to examine & correct it but believe me with much Esteem Your Most Obedient Serv.
