Letter regarding William Jenks' position on baptism. Jenks was being considered for a pastoral position in North Church, Portsmouth, a position which he ultimately declined. See North Church Records (MS036, Box 18, folder 8) for more correspondence on this subject. William Jenks (1778-1866), graduated from Harvard in 1797 and held pastorates in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Bath, Maine. He also was on the faculty at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine. In 1817 he removed to Boston, where he founded a mission for seamen and was active in other humanitarian efforts. He was a founder of the American Antiquarian Society. |
