Obligation of Tobias Langdon & Samuel Weeks to pay the town of Portsmouth 40 shillings a year for use of water in saw mill on the Winnicut River, 1697. |
Scope & Content |
November 29th, 1697 At a meeting of the selectmen the day above, said Capt. Tobias Langdon and Samuel Weeks having built a sawmill on the Winnicut River within the town of Portsmouth and they, the said Langdon and Weeks, desiring to have the privilege of water to said mill for sawing. It is this day agreed with them by the selectmen of said town, on behalf of the town, that they shall have the full privilege of the said water for sawing not hindering any former grant or bargain made by the town to any other person. They or either of them paying yearly and every year forever the full sum of forty shillings per annum (year) to the settlement or their order from year to year for the use of the town forever and for the then pertinent hereof the said Langdon and Weeks on behalf of themselves, heirs and executors and John Dennett, John Pickering Sr., William Cotton for themselves on behalf of the town due in as selectmen engaged that they, the said Langdon and Weeks shall have and hold & enjoy the privilege of the water as above said as willness over hands, the day and year above said.
