Edward C. Ewen papers, 1894-1914 |
Scope & Content |
Papers of Edward C. Ewen and the Ewen family of 108 Burkitt Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The collection is dated 1894 to 1914. The papers mainly contain correspondence received by Edward C. Ewen (primarily letters and notes from Charlotte M. Paul) but also include school papers and other writings, dated 1911 to 1914. Edward C. Ewen (1897-1959) and Charlotte M. Paul (1895-1995) were "friends" from at least 1912 to 1914. In addition, the papers include a receipt for rent paid by George Ewen, dated 1894, as well as business invoices and receipts from wholesale grocers H. F. Adams and J. M. Hastings, dated 1900 to 1912 (bulk dated 1911). Although it is not clear how the personal papers of Edward C. Ewen and the business records are connected, some of the documents were mixed together and names of the Ewen family members appear on the receipts. It appears the Ewen family may have been a distributor of groceries. Edward C. Ewen's school papers include a report about keeping accounting records for the grocery business.
