Three letters between Mrs. C. Waldo [Gertrude] Pickett in New Castle, New Hampshire, and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, regarding shipbuilding in Portsmouth. Dated May 1973. Pickett wrote to the museum on May 4 in hopes of acquiring a list of the vessels built by Samuel Badger In Portsmouth from 1832 to 1857. She received a reply on May 21 from Philip Chadwick Foster Smith, curator of maritime history, mentioning the museum's William Badger papers and Fernald and Pettigrew [shipyard] papers. Pickett followed up on May 24, explaining her husband's descendence from William Pettigrew and her research in preparation for publishing her manuscript, Portsmouth's Heyday in Shipbuilding: 1840 to 1860. |
