One hundred and thirteen share certificates, number 1 to 118, for the Portsmouth Trust and Guarantee Company in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Dated from 1871 to 1876. The majority of the certificates are dated from 1871, at the time of the bank's founding, and are stamped. Shares purchased range from two to seventy shares. Some of the shareholders include women. Certificates numbered 11, 34, 41, 53, 64, and 112 are missing. Certificate 35 includes a duplicate. |
Admin/Biographical History |
The Portsmouth Trust and Guarantee Company was established in 1871 and located at 12 Pleasant Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Among the bank's original board of directors, and later its president, was Portsmouth businessman Frank Jones. The bank suspended dividend payments between 1876 and 1885, and it suspended operations from late 1884 to early 1885. In 1947, the bank became the Portsmouth Trust Company. In the 1980s, it was acquired by BankEast, which went bankrupt in 1991; the bank's remaining assets were acquired by the First New Hampshire Bank. |
