Various papers pertaining to Thaddeus Tarlton of Newcastle, N.H., including correspondence, certificates of appointment, petitions (folder 1), town treasurer's receipts (folder 2), and post office deposit slips (folder 3). Thaddeus Tarlton was born in Newcastle in Aug 1832, the son of Ann E. Tarlton, and was a lifelong resident of the town. Before the Civil War he commanded a fishing vessel and worked at the Portsmouth Navy Shipyard, from which he was voluntarily discharged in 1862. He was appointed Boatman of the Life-Saving Station in Newcastle, a federal government position, in 1885 and served in this capacity until 1890. He was then appointed postmaster for the town from 1893 to 1897. He also served as town selectman from 1889 to1905 and was a member of the state legislature as a Democrat in 1883. He was exchequer of the Knights of Pythias for eight years. ThaddeusTarlton married Harriet L. Franklin of Newcastle in 1895 when he was 62 years old. They had no children. |
