Account book belonging to Joseph Doe, dating from 1818 to 1847. Account book begins with a large section of records of accounts Joseph Doe kept with the Proprietors of Dover Turnpike beginning in 1818. The Proprietors of Dover Turnpike Road was incorporated Dec 21, 1803 and connected Dover, Somersworth and Berwick, Maine, a total distance of 4 ½ miles. Entries for this section include expenses for oxen, rum, labor by individuals, gravel, willow stakes, etc. Includes lists of individuals paid for doing maintenance on the road, including Joseph Doe, who appears to have been contracted for work. List of individuals included appears in the People Search Field. The second part of the book is "Account of Sale of Property of Samuel Varney at Auction March 27, 1837. By Joseph Doe Auctioneer. George W. Roberts Clerk." Estate included household furniture such as chairs, tables, desks, umbrellas, hearth equipment, bedsteads, bureaus, looking glass, candlesticks, lamps, barrels and other kitchenware, as well as farm implements such as a plough, shovels, hay fork, grinding stone, yoke, scythes, tools, pumps, axes, wagons, etc. Records include list of estate articles as well as who purchased them and for how much. The third part of the book is accounts between Joseph Doe and various other individuals including: "Samuel Varney in account with Joseph Doe," 1841 (page 33-34) "S. R. Griffin to Joseph Doe," 1839 (37-39) for pasturing animals and purchasing building supplies. "Oliver Yeaton to Joseph Doe," 1841-1844 "Capt. I. Goodwin to Joseph Doe," 1839-1842 for oak and pine timber, hay, etc. "Col. Love Keay to Joseph Doe," 1841-1846 "William H. Griffin to Joseph Doe," 1842-1843 "W. E. and E. K. Griffin to Joseph Doe," 1840-1846 for wagons, pine, etc. "William E. Griffin," 1840-1848 for barley, potatoes, "boy + oxen," parsnips, etc. "Elizabeth K.
