Two letters from Elizabeth Parkhurst Spalding (Portsmouth) to Francisca Anna Pascalis Canfield (New York): July 22, 1822 - Letter provides detailed description of "climate" and weather in Portsmouth. July 26, 1822 (letter on same sheet as July 22 letter above) - Letter describes family. Elizabeth's father Dr. Lyman Spalding in October of 1821 and her mother, Elizabeth Coues Spalding, was now living in Portsmouth at Elizabeth's late grandfather's (Capt Peter Coues) house on State Street. She describes the household as her mother, Elizabeth, Uncle Samuel Elliot Coues, Aunt, likely Charlotte Coues, her three brothers: Lyman Dyer Spalding, Alfred Peter Spalding, and Edward Jenner Spalding and her sister, Adelaide Spalding. She also mentions one domestic and a cook. She mentions that her mother is traveling to Gilmanton, NH and provides description of a woman named Hannah Peaslee. Aug 26, 1823 - Letter mentions a Linnaeu Celebration. Elizabeth describes her birthday and feelings about turning twenty. She then provides a detailed description of a trip she took to Gloucester, Massachusetts with descriptions of the towns of Greenland, North Hampton, Hampton, Hampton Falls, Seabrook, Salisbury and Newburyport. She mentions an area called "Red Hill," Hampton Academy and crossing the Essex Bridge. She provides a description of the home of Timothy Dexter in Newburyport, known for having an eclectic collection of wooden statues of politicians in the front yard.
