Title |
Eliphalet Ladd to John Langdon |
Scope & Content |
Three page letter from Eliphalet Ladd in Exeter to John Langdon in Philadelphia. Eliphalet Ladd was a merchant and shipowner in Exeter. Writes that a few days after his last letter, a few gentlemn met to discuss the business of the bank and how it should operate, but that there was so much disagreement "respecting the operation, the sum to be deposited, and the uncertainty of the state being concerned or even giving a charter" that had he not pushed hard on the matter, nothing would have come of it. As it was, they met again and a plan was agreed to prefer a petition to the General Court for a charter to begin with 60m dollars in 150 shares and liberty to extend it to any sum not exceeding 200m to be paid all in cash. The Court incorporated the petitioners without much opposition. He says almost all the subscriptions were filled straight away. He had not heard from Langdon or Langdon's brother or Messrs. Wingate and Gilman about buying shares, but he insisted upon reserving a few shares for all he had written to. Dated January 5, 1792. |
