Research materials collected by Richard M. Candee for his 1985 book, Atlantic Heights: A World War I Shipbuilders' Community. Includes mainly photocopies of records regarding the development of the Atlantic Heights area of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, including records of the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, Atlantic Heights Company, Atlantic Corporation, National Gypsum, and White Mountain Paper Company. Some of the copies contain Candee's annotations corresponding to page numbers in his book. Also includes Candee's correspondence with various archives regarding his research as well as correspondence addressed to Candee regarding reminiscences from people who grew up in Atlantic Heights. The materials were collected from 1983 to 1984. FOLDER LISTING Folder 1 Atlantic Heights records, 1918-1925 Contains copies of records related to the Atlantic Heights development, dated from 1918 to 1925. Includes floor plans and illustrations prepared by architects Kilham & Hopkins of Boston, Massachusetts; Atlantic Corporation financial statements; correspondence from the Emergency Fleet Corporation regarding rental figures and tenants; correspondence from the Atlantic Heights Company regarding tenants and properties; articles of incorporation for the Atlantic Heights Company (1918) with Candee's notes; and correspondence from architects Kilham & Hopkins regarding plans for the development. Some originals may be in the United States Shipping Board records held at the National Archives and Records Administration. Of note are three letters from 1919 and 1921 regarding the explicit exclusion of people of color from Atlantic Heights. Per W. H. Ball of the Emergency Fleet Corporation, "The Atlantic Heights project is a restricted neighborhood and if it is necessary to flatly turn down colored tenants you have the authority to do so. We simply suggested that you use diplomacy in the matter and endeavor to handle this without causing us any trouble" (September 18, 1919). Folder 2 Letter from Richard M. Candee to Board of Adjustment, 1984 Contains a letter from Richard M. Candee to the Zoning Board of Adjustment for the City of Portsmouth regarding preservation of the National Gypsum office building, including a history of the site. On Boston University letterhead. Dated September 25, 1984. Folder 3 Letter from Crane & Co. to Richard M. Candee, 1984 Contains a letter from Crane & Co. to Richard M. Candee in response to Candee's request for records related to the White Mountain Paper Company. On Crane & Co. letterhead. Dated June 12, 1984. Folder 4 White Mountain Paper Company records, 1902-1903 Contains copies of records pertaining to inventories of property for the White Mountain Paper Company, dated from 1902 to 1903. Folder 5 Correspondence regarding memories of Atlantic Heights, 1984 Letters to and from Richard M. Candee as well as Candee's notes related to his research on the Atlantic Heights development, dated 1984. Candee gave a lecture on Atlantic Heights in 1984 [February 27, held at the Portsmouth Public Library], and many attendees followed up with him or he followed up with them. Includes a list of people who lived in Atlantic Heights. Original folder labeled "Early Residents" and recording Candee's notes was photocopied. 1. Four-page note from Ruth V. (Johnson) Ronnquist, dated February 28, [1984]. Was unable to attend Candee's lecture and asks whether the house she lived in was demolished. Includes a drawing of the houses on Ranger, Preble, and Concord ways and lists the people who lived there. 2. Notecard from Clarice F. Ramsdell, dated March 5, 1984. Offers to meet with Candee at Atlantic Heights to discuss her memories of the neighborhood. 3. Four-page typescript from Jane Maynard Ward, dated August 24, 1984. Shares reminiscences about growing up in Atlantic Heights in the 1940s and '50s and still living there. 4. Three-page letter from Alice M. Stebbins, dated September 18, 1984. Shares reminiscences about growing up in Atlantic Heights in the 1920s, including going to school there. Asks about a school photograph Candee intended to send her. Also encloses permission for Candee to reproduce her written and photographic materials for his book. 5. Two-page letter from Alice M. Stebbins, dated September 26, 1984. Regarding abovementioned school photograph and memories of the building. 6. One-page list from Henry Margeson of the ship half hull models housed at the Portsmouth Athenaeum for the purpose of a ship rebuilding program. Undated. 7. Seven-page, handwritten notes [possibly from Warren Nickerson] addressed to Candee with comments regarding an August 30, 1984, news release in the Portsmouth Herald, naming early residents of Atlantic Heights. 8. One-page, typed list of names and contact information for people who lived in Atlantic Heights [a guest list for the Atlantic Heights reunion held on October 27, 1984, from Warren Nickerson]. Includes each person's approximate dates as to when they lived in the neighborhood. 9. One-page, typed list of additional names and contact information provided by Warren Nickerson regarding early residents of Atlantic Heights. 10. Two-page, typed letter addressed to "Barb" regarding reminiscences about Atlantic Heights, dated September 12, 1984. 11. Three pages of copies of letters from Candee to prospective people to talk to about Atlantic Heights, dated February 29, 1984. Folder 6 Atlantic Corporation records, 1917-1925 Contains copies of records regarding the Atlantic Corporation, dated 1917 to 1925. The records especially pertain to Atlantic Corporation's contract with the Emergency Fleet Corporation to build steel ships (initially also wood ships), along with records about the ensuing lawsuit and settlement between the two corporations. Originals are likely in the United States Shipping Board records held at the National Archives and Records Administration. Folder 7 Atlantic Corporation site plan and ship plans, c1918-c1920 Contains copies of a site plan of the "Yard & Works" of the Atlantic Corporation along the Piscataqua River, also bordered by the Boston and Maine Railroad, circa 1918 (two copies, one oversize across two pages). Also contains ship plans for the steel cargo ship Emergency Fleet Corporation Design 1019 (five pages, plus one oversize photographic reproduction from the Library of Congress), circa 1920. Originals may be in the United States Shipping Board records held at the National Archives and Records Administration. Folder 8 Letter from the National Archives and Records Service to Richard M. Candee, 1984 Contains a letter from Kenneth R. Hall of the National Archives and Records Service [National Archives and Records Administration] to Richard M. Candee in response to Candee's request for records related to the Atlantic Corporation. On General Services Administration letterhead. Dated July 14, 1984. Folder 9 Mason Machine Works record and reproduction request, 1983 Copy of a report on the financial standing of the Mason Machine Works of Taunton, Massachusetts, dated April 22, 1891 (two pages). From the manuscripts department at the Baker Library, Harvard Business School. Includes a reproduction request form completed by Candee for the Baker Library and dated October 21, 1983. Folder 10 Atlantic Corporation records and research correspondence, 1984 Contains a letter to Richard M. Candee from Jeffrey E. Brown of the Maine State Archives in response to Candee's request for records related to the Atlantic Corporation, dated July 16, 1984; a form from the Maine State Archives stating that the enclosed material may fulfill the research request, dated July 26, 1984; and copies of four records from the Maine State Archives pertaining to the incorporation and disbandment of the Atlantic Corporation, dated 1917 to 1926. |
