Title |
Portsmouth Housing Authority |
Scope & Content |
Scope and Content Note: The collection contains materials from the period of urban renewal in Portsmouth from 1958-1970. More specifically, it documents both the Vaughan Street Project and the expansion of public housing in the city. The projects were managed by the Portsmouth Housing Authority, which in the late 1950s was not only a housing authority, but also a redevelopment / urban renewal agency. The materials provide documentation on properties that were surveyed, assessed, researched, and photographed during the project. Comparative assessments were made with other properties around the town to arrive at fair compensation rates to deed holders. Included are homes and businesses on Bridge, Congress, Deer, Hanover, High, Hill, Jackson, Maplewood, Market, Russell, School, Vaughan and Wall Streets, Raitts Court, and Raynes Avenue. Historical Note: In the late 1950s, the federal government began funding urban renewal projects across the country and the city of Portsmouth, through the Portsmouth Housing Authority, was awarded funds to undertake a number of redevelopment projects. The Vaughan Street Project saw approximately 176 inhabited homes and active businesses in Portsmouth's North End demolished. The North End neighborhood was bordered by Market, High, Congress, Bridge, Maplewood, and Russell Streets and was predominantly an Italian neighborhood, although it also included Yankee-born, Greek, Polish, Chinese, Swedish and African-American families.
