Scope & Content |
Two-page letter from Jeremiah Libbey in Portsmouth to John Langdon in Philadelphia. Transcription by Cecilia Paquette: Portsmouth March 13th. 1792 Dear Sir I received your kind favour of the 25th of Feby. Inclosing the Post Office Act & the last post and for which please to accept my thanks. I have not had Opportunity to peruse it so thoro'ly as I Intend, but from what Obser= =vations I have been able to make I think it far better than the one proposed last year. I find it will require a new mode of keeping the Accounts, of course New Books and every other paper, and Conclude the Post Master General will arrange and send on such Books & papers as are proper, in Season, otherwise it will make sad work to get the Accounts properly arranged-- as the Quarterly Accounts are closed the first of July, I suppose all June must be allow'd to get in Order, for the Charges of Letters on the Old Act and the Rect. of the same under the New will make such an alteration that one month will be a little enough to get things regular. I find there is to be a post from this thr'o Exeter, Concord &c &c will the Post Master General fix on all the Towns it is to pass thr'o &c or will some person be authorised to go and fix the Off= =fices & give the Necessary Instructions to the Post Masters. I find that the allowance to me is not Increased my Commissions is nearly one hundred Dollars so that the PM G cannot add any Commissions above 20 [currency symbols] where it amounts to that sum. I was in hopes of some compensation nearly equal to that time & trouble spent in the business but am disappointed at present--for it it is and has been the case, that I have not recd. any thing like a Compensation for the time Spent in the business, and that I believe you are Sensible of--but I am not Insensible that there are difficultys in getting Matters always as we wish them and as are right therefore I shall for the present rest satisfied, and am Sir with much respect Your Most Hum Servant Jeremiah Libbey PS. please to make my best regards to your Brother and Mr H-- [left margin, in Langdon's hand] Jerem.
