Liberty Bridge
To perpetuate to posterity the memory of glorious __________ the early history of their ____ has ever __ the anxious care of the patriotic and virtuous in every age. The venerable relics of the revolution are rapidly passing away. The monuments of our fathers are, with them, returning to their original dust. Our children will look to us for some portion of that spirit which actuated a generation now gathered to their fathers - for some memento that we duly appreciated the blessings purchased at innumerable and painful sacrifices. The Liberty Pole is a favorite symbol to freemen. At the era of the revolution which emancipated our country from the thralldom of European domination such simple, yet expressive, emblems of the spirit of times, adorned almost every village green. But these no longer point to those skies whence the genius descended. It is therefore proposed to erect on the ensuing fourth of July, on Liberty Bridge, in Water Street, an elegant Liberty Pole adorned with a Cap and surmounted with a splendid Eagle. To defray the expenses incident to its erection, of purchasing an ensign to adorn it, and of firing a salute on the occasion we the subscribers engage to pay the sum as affixed to our names, on demand.
