Titled, "Edward Sargent New Castle, 1794." Sargent appears to be a scribe and his book contains numerous scattered entries for his clients, primarily ship builders and captains. He also appears to hire himself out to take measurements of ships under construction and to record legal items, such as estate inventories. He frequently worked for Capt. Edmund Roberts and Capt. Giddinge. There are also a few scattered personal notes. According to a brief family record found in the book, Edward Sargent was born Dec 26, 1737 and married Betty Johnson February 7, 1760. She died August 19, 1784. Sargent married Sarah Wendell December 30, 1784 by the Rev. Haven. Sarah’s sister, Elizabeth Wendell, married William Berry of Rye March 6, 1796. He notes that his sister Ruth Peirce wife of Daniel Peirce of Kittery, died December 1, 1800 of "convulsive spasmodic disorder." Sampling of entries: 1794 Aug 18 Henry Trefethen of Kittery 1797 Feb 11 took "possession (as one of the Executors of the will of William Fernald) of a Room in the House called Leeche’s House, near the South Meeting House." He then rented the space to Benjamin Yeaton. 1776 Mar 22 Capt. Edmund Roberts to Schooner Sally. Record of accounts paid for voyage to London. 1796 May "Acc. Cost finishing New NE Chamber in my House." Includes purchasing lumber and supplies (clapboards, lathing boards, nails, locks, brass hinges, etc.), Portsmouth carpenter, James Nutter was paid "for finishing Chamber," Joseph Ayers was paid to paint, Daniel Blaisdell was paid to plaster 1776 Apr 6 "By Cash to Capt. Giddinge" for goods such as: 6 barrels pork, bush beans, 1 grindstone, cordage, 24 blocks, 24 iron hooks, 3 iron hoop buckets, 24 scanes marline, iron teakettle, small iron pot, copper coffee pot, 100 fm tarred line, large hammer, tea and rum. 1802 July - Oct "Acct Sundries business" for legal matters including: John W. Hackett (Dover) 1803 Agreement to take care of the business of and power of attorney for Reuben Shapley during his voyage to Europe on his Ship Wonolonset 1794 ca. "Owners Schooner Aurora & cargo captured by Rattlesnake Sloop of War & condemned…" List of expenses "for advice and to procure papers to E. Sargent." Expenses include: Boat and land twice at New Castle, procuring papers, registering protest, postage for letters, "sending to Dominica for copy of admiralty proceedings in the condemnation, sending letters to agent Williams in London, letter duplicates, lawyers advice, etc. 1776 March 22 Captain Nathaniel Giddinge Schooner Sally, record of expenses. 1807 ca. Capt. James Drisco account for writing letters, "measuring on the graving Beech for Carpenter’s tonnage," writing notes, including "settling account for him with Badger Carpentry Decking the Venus…" 1796 Agreement for hiring John Greenleaf to drive he and two others to Boston via Coach. Calls himself "the writer of this memorandum." 1802 Agreement for coach to bring a large group of individuals to Hampton to celebrate the 4th of July. 1797 Janvrin Fisher of Dover for work on his new ship at Sheafe’s Wharf 1803 Nov 15 Adopted Dorothy Wendell Berry of Rye, daughter of William and Elizabeth Berry 1801 Jan 7 Took in the elderly Capt. James Miller. "I do at present ever rejoice that my heart is made susceptible to the feelings of humanity towards my fellow man." |
