Two letters regarding the effect of Prohibition in Portsmouth. One letter is from Frank Jones Brewing Co., Portsmouth Brewing Co. and Eldredge Brewing Co. to Gov. Henry W. Keyes dated April 9, 1917. The letter outlines the economic hardship that the town would experience should Prohibition become a reality. The second letter, dated April 2, is addressed to NH State Senator Joseph B. Perley from a group of Portsmouth businessmen is asking that the "Lewis Bill" not be passed. The Lewis Bill brought prohibition to the State of New Hampshire in 1918. The letters describe in detail the importance of Portsmouth's breweries to the community's economy.
