Correspondence, mainly stampless covers, collected by Michael O'Traynor. Letters involve a variety of dates, correspondents, and subjects. Dated 1755 to 1888. O'Traynor, a 1962 graduate of Portsmouth High School, was a stamp collector. FOLDER CONTENTS 1. Stampless cover from Joshua Blanchard in Boston, Mass., to George Frost in New Castle, N.H. Concerning shipping. Dated November 18, 1755. 2. Stampless cover from Jos[hua] and Allen Crocker in Boston, Mass., to merchants Samuel and William Hale in Portsmouth, N.H. Concerning unpaid bills and mentions "warr, warr." Dated June 28, 1798. 3. Stampless cover from Bailey & Bogert in New York, N.Y., to merchants William and Charles Neil in Portsmouth, N.H. Concerning payment for Thomas Sheafe's draft on Robert Lenox. Includes an itemized bill. Dated August 6, 1801. 4. Stampless cover from Cazeaux Freres & Co. in Bordeaux, France, to James Sheafe in Portsmouth, N.H. Concerning a bill of lading for the ship Eagle of Boston. Also concerning consignment of wine and brandy aboard the ship Peter of Boston, William D. Doak (shipmaster), in the account of their brother, Ge[rard] Cazeaux. Duplicate copy. Two pages. Dated April 11, 1804. 5. Stampless cover from James Scott in New York, N.Y., to James Sheafe in Portsmouth, N.H. Concerning the death of John Trumbull in a horse-riding accident. Stampless cover from J[eremiah] Mason from Amherst, N.H., to [wife] Mary Mason in Portsmouth, N.H. Sent via Boston, Mass. Concerning illnesses and travel plans. Dated June 27, 1814. 8. Partial stampless cover from Eleanora to Mrs. E. H. Thacher in Biddeford, Me. Originally addressed to Nath[aniel] A. Haven in Portsmouth, N.H. Concerning family matters. Dated April [1821]. 9. Ship letter from James Shapley and Jacob Wendell to Reuben S. Randall aboard the brig Mary & Jane in Baltimore, Md. From Shapley, concerning plans to get safe passage home for Mrs. Townsend's son. From Wendell, general news; he was Randall's brother-in-law. Dated May 25, 1822. 10. Stampless cover from Edmund Q. Sheafe in Portsmouth, N.H., to merchant Washington Williams in Dover, N.H. Dated February 1, 1831. 11. Ship letter from Jacob J. Storer in Portsmouth, N.H., to his brother Robert B. Storer aboard the frigate Potomac in Rio de Janeiro, care of Burkhead & Pierce in Baltimore, Md. Concering family, Portsmouth, and military matters. Dated October 25, 1841. 12. Partial piece of printed stationery (envelope) for the Portsmouth Journal, C. W. Brewster & Son. Addressed to W. F. Goodwin in Concord, N.H. Includes canceled stamp. Dated circa 1850s-1860s. 13. Typescript of undated and unpublished poem entitled "Fame," with annotated punctuation and autographed by Celia Thaxter. Also a handwritten letter by Thaxter at the Isles of Shoals stating her approval of the practice of cremation, dated October 13, 1888. |
