Title |
Josiah Bartlett to John Langdon. |
Scope & Content |
Josiah Bartlett in Philadelphia to John Langdon in Portsmouth, N.H. Describes in great detail the first public audience in Congress: Conrad Alexandre Gerard, Minister Plenipotentiary to America, 1778-1779. Mentions that Mr. [Hunking?] Wentworth has arrived, but is in bad health and should return home, for he will be of little help as he is and that the city is not a good place to be while ill. Also comments that his "waiter" Charles Chase (?) has contracted the camp distemper and is in a distant part of the city recuperating. Hopes that N.H. will appoint delegates to relieve those in Philadelphia by the first of November because two will be necessary to vote. If Wentworth has not recovered enough to remain in Philadelphia, replacements will have to be sent. Dated August 8th, 1778. |
