Collection of the Seacoast NH LGBT History Project, dated 1973 to 2023. The materials were primarily collected by Tom Kaufhold, founder of the Seacoast NH LGBT History Project, based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The materials are arranged into three series by format: subject files, ephemera, and photographs. The first series includes subject files on people, organizations, and topics related to the LGBTQ+ community in New Hampshire. The subject files contain the personal papers of LGBTQ+ people and allies, including Deb Cram, Tom Kaufhold, David Polando, Chuck Rhoades, Robert Stiefel, and Melissa Weeks; organizational records of local and statewide organizations, including the AIDS Response Seacoast, New Hampshire Coalition, New Hampshire Gay Men's Chorus, Gay Academic Union of New England, Granite State AIDS Consortium, Open Door City Coalition, Out and About, PFLAG New Hampshire, Seacoast Gay Men, Seacoast Outright, and Women Singing OUT!; and other documents, such as newspaper clippings, programs, and handouts, related to activism, sexual education, gender diversity, and state legislation. The second series includes ephemera, such as stickers, pins, t-shirts, flags, and signs, related to LGBTQ+ organizations and events in the Seacoast area. The third series includes photographs of LGBTQ+ people and events from the Seacoast area. Note on processing status: Parts of the collection, mainly ephemera and photographs, remain unprocessed. Includes articles relating to community discord around sexual education and the publication of a teaching manual, "Mutual Caring--Mutual Sharing," distributed by the Strafford County Prenatal and Family Planning Program, of which Rhoades was the director. This study was conducted in a Portsmouth gay bar over the course of five months in 1993 to assess the knowledge, attitudes and behavior of men who have sex with other men (MSM) in the greater Portsmouth area. Folder 2 Women Singing OUT! Two images of Women Singing OUT! group members and a postcard of Basilique Notre-Dame in Montreal. The items are not dated. Women Singing OUT! was a nonprofit organization that aimed to promote musical excellence and social change through public performances of choral music. The group was made up of "female voices," who identified as lesbians or otherwise friends of the lesbian community on the Seacoast. BOX 6 Folder 1 Open Door City Coalition The Open Door City Coalition (ODCC) was an organization founded and run by a grassroots group of individuals, committed to the prevention and elimination of discrimination against people based on sexual orientation. Because of the ODCC's efforts, the City of Portsmouth passed an equal rights ordinance in 1993, protecting members of the public against discrimination based on sexual orientation.
