Ruth Whittier, born in Dover, N.H., a cousin of John Greenleaf Whittier, married Dr. Samuel Shute, lived in Weare, N.H.. Traveled to northern Vt. and NY state where Dr. Shute had relatives and where he died. She returned to Concord and continued to work alone as an artist. Many of their portraits were done by both husband and wife, each adding their own touches. Folder contains article from New England Antiques Journal.

Mrs. R.W. Shute was a portraitist working in New Hampshire 1834-1836. Samuel Shute worked separately; then he and Ruth Whittier Shute worked and traveled together and were painting in the New Hampshire, Vermont, New York area. He died earlier than she and was the less skilled of the two.
