MS022 B09 F09 - James F. Shores, Journal of a trip to Richmond, Indiana

Chronicle of a 38-day round trip journey from Portsmouth, NH, to Richmond, Indiana, taken by James F. Shores, Jr., a 26-year old Portsmouth businessman. His itinerary included Boston, New York, Philadelphia, the Hudson River, Niagara Falls, Lake Erie and Columbus, Ohio, returning via Ohio, Wheeling, West Virginia, the Allegany Mountains, Baltimore and Washington. His primary modes of travel were railroad, steamboat and stagecoach. James Shores' father owned a book and stationery store on Market Street in Portsmouth, and James Shores, Jr. continued the business. S1092 - Samuel Sides Cemetery Deed

Samuel Side's deed for a plot in the Proprietors' Burying Ground. Representatives of the South Church Charity Fund are Andrew P. Peabody, John Haven, W H Y Hackett, and James F Shores. There is a note dated 1840 that the certificate was cancelled because the sum due was not paid.

S1498 - Howard Benevolent Society Records

Record book for the Howard Benevolent Society and several loose enclosures. Book begins with the founding of the Society in 1829 with the intent of forming "a charitable association for the relief of the poor of the town of Portsmouth." The committee members present at the formation were listed as: Charles W. Cutter, John W. Foster, Ebenezer Wheelwright, Rev. Asabel Davis, Rev. Israel Putnam, Rev. Charles Burroughs and Alfred W. Haven. Bylaws from 1829 state that committee members would "seek out cases of actual distress, and to attend to all applications that shall be made to them by any member of the society, by visiting the person or family standing in need of relief and investigating
