S1287 a&b - Salter, George H.C. Papers (1826-1895)

S1287a: Documents and correspondence relating to the diplomatic career of Dr. George H. C. Salter (1826-1895). Born in New York City and died in Washington, DC, he was buried in the family plot in Portsmouth, NH. Salter was a physician and a correspondent for the New York Times in Charleston, SC. when the Civil War began. He enlisted in the Union Army. The bulk of his career was spent in Asia, where he was US Consul in Hankow, China, and an instructor at a Japanese school in Nagasaki. These papers consist of recommendations and other material surrounding his diplomatic career, as well as notes for two lectures or speeches. Includes autograph of Hamilton Fish and Andrew Johnson's signature.
