S1181 - Ship Orozembo Legal Documents

Documents related to the capture of the Ship Orozembo by the British in 1807. The Ship Orozembo was owned by William Boyd of Portsmouth with Captain William Brewster during the voyage of capture. In the documents Brewster states that the ship was seized by the British "off the Rocks of Lisbon" because there were French passengers on board. The ship was captured after being chartered to carry passengers from Lisbon to Macao. Along with original document there is a three page typed transcript of research regarding the ship and the document.

S1223a - Mark Laighton Day Book

Account book was kept between 1804 and 1813. The handwriting changes several times, suggesting several people were keeping the records over the time period. The book is part of a three volume set presumed to be owned by Mark Laighton, a mast and block maker, who also invented the roller block. Entries include various specialized ship elements, such as spars, blocks, and tackles. Sometimes the records list ship work by the owner or captain of the ship, later around 1807, the entries are for individuals ships. The entries also show that the keeper of the book was being paid with rum, tea, coffee and dry goods and he then sold the items, which is also recorded. In addition to ship wor
